At Emmanuel, the English major prepares you to think critically, communicate effectively and understand the stories that shape people, cultures and societies. By exploring major works of British, American and World literature, you'll examine enduring questions about identity, justice, power and the human experience. The chemistry major with a concentration in forensic science explores the role of science in solving crimes and supporting the justice system. You’ll learn how chemical and biological evidence is collected, analyzed and interpreted to inform investigations and protect public safety.

How do the social and cultural constructions of masculinity and femininity affect gender roles within historical and contemporary society?

How have the diverse experiences, contributions and voices of all individuals and groups—those both marginalized and empowered by gender identities, and including those who identify as women and the LGBTQ+ community—advanced the way we think about gender and inequality? Through this interdisciplinary minor, you will have the opportunity to explore gender in both historical and contemporary perspectives, the ways gender affects identities and relationships, the representation of gender in the arts and media, and the politics surrounding gender identity and construction. You will also question assumptions and challenge stereotypes on gender equity, race, ethnicity, class, ability, religious affiliation and other categories of identity.

This interdisciplinary program integrates the sciences, social sciences, and humanities to seek answers to the enormous health challenges facing the U.S. and the world. This includes how factors influencing health promotion and disease prevention intersect with the environmental, political, and social determinants of health to vulnerable populations locally and globally. The major and minor therefore cover issues of the science of disease and health as they relate to public policy, poverty, race, class, gender, ethics, peace and war, as well as mental healthcare and cultural components of addiction and how healthcare providers can best communicate with the public
