How much should NCAA schools compensate student-athletes in the form of scholarships? Do sports video games and fantasy leagues overstep trademark or rights of publicity law? It’s no secret that there is big money in sports. The sports market (which includes ticket sales, sponsorships, media rights and merchandising) in North America alone is worth an estimated $73 billion (Statista, November 2019).

Given the competitive nature of the industry and lucrative deals around multi-million-dollar payrolls, lawsuits are inevitable. This course offers a review of legislation and cases relating to professional and amateur athletics and athletes, sports events, sports merchandising, contracts, broadcasting and sponsorships.

Every action by a customer provides a valuable piece of information for many areas of business— from marketing and operations to human resources and finance. But how do we use this raw data to uncover trends and inefficiencies and transform it into actionable, decision making insights in order to remain competitive and better serve customers?

Through project-based work with an emphasis on ethics and communication, you will learn the basic concepts surrounding big data as well as how to describe, visualize, predict and inform business decisions.

From banners at the top of web pages and Instagram posts to e-mails and promotional notifications when passing by a certain retailer, we are bombarded by advertisements every day. Sometimes the ads are for the same pair of boots you were considering two weeks ago—and that’s not a coincidence.

In an time when marketers and consumers are equally savvy, learn more about how companies use keywords, location intelligence and other analytics to plan, target and create interactive marketing tools designed to reach the right audience with the right message at the right time.

The past century has brought unprecedented growth to companies that help improve societal well-being—but at what cost to our natural environment? Policies such as the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act have drastically changed the way businesses operate.

Proposals to responsibly use minerals and oil, manage renewable resources such as water and forests, conserve biodiversity, mitigate global climate change and regulate pollution are often complex, costly and widespread in how they affect multiple industries. So, the question remains—how far are businesses willing to go to embrace environmental responsibility?
