First Gen Program

Emmanuel’s First Gen Program is a whole community built around students who are the first in their family to navigate college — workshops, mentors, events, and a network of people who already have your back.

If any of this sounds like you, this program is for you.

There's no single story. First gen looks different for everyone. Here's how we think about it.

  • Your parents or guardians didn't complete a four-year college degree.
  • You've had limited contact with people who've had a college experience.
  • Your parents attended college in a different country, where the educational system works differently than in the U.S.
  • A parent completed a degree, but isn't part of your life today.

What this community is built to do.

  • Belonging: Build a community where shared experiences remind you that you're never navigating this path by yourself.
  • Networking: Connect you with faculty, staff, and alumni who want to help.
  • Development: Workshops on academic skills, identity, and career readiness.
  • Leadership: Grow student leaders through the Ambassador program.

A year designed with you in mind.

As a first-gen student, you can participate and engage in tailored events and programs. Here are some programs and events you can expect to see throughout the year. 

  • Late Aug / Early Sept — Annual Meet & Greet: Meet other first-gen students in your incoming class on day one so you'll already know some familiar faces.
  • September — Get Technically Ready Workshop: Get set up for the semester with IT and learn your way around Emmanuel's essential tech tools and systems.
  • November 8 — National First Gen Day: Our signature celebration; community, recognition, and a reminder of who's standing with you and the opportunities available to you. 
  • Year-round — Workshops & Social Events: Financial literacy, networking & LinkedIn sessions, game nights, bowling, and conversations on imposter syndrome and self-advocacy and more.
  • Ongoing — First Gen Student Ambassadors: A leadership role for sophomores and above. Mentor incoming students and help shape the program.
  • Spring & Beyond — Advising, Wellness & Post-Grad Planning: Targeted advising, mental health check-ins, and support planning your next step after Emmanuel.
