Ryan Doran ‘22 is swiftly carving out a reputation as a rising talent in the world of graphic design and animation.
Barely two years into his career, he has already garnered national attention for his work on the Hartford Public Library rebranding project, a collaboration with Miranda Creative that earned a coveted spot in Graphic Design USA's American Graphic Design Awards issue. His team’s work on the project was recognized for excellence in motion design and branding—a testament to Doran’s growing expertise in bringing brands to life through animation.
Yet, a future in design was not always in the cards. Raised in Connecticut, Doran attended a technical high school where he initially set his sights on architectural design. “I always thought I wanted to be an architect,” he said. It was a late shift in focus during high school that steered him toward graphic design—a field that fused his artistic instincts with his fascination for technology. This newfound passion led him to Emmanuel College, a choice he describes as a perfect confluence of location, community, and opportunity.
The Emmanuel Experience: Crafting a Foundation
“Emmanuel was the perfect balance of everything I was looking for,” Doran said. “The location in Boston, the size of the campus, and the small class sizes made it feel like a place where I could really grow and thrive.” The college’s fine arts program, rooted in traditional art forms like drawing and sculpture, provided a crucial foundation for his design work. His technical experience from high school—hand drafting and mastering design software—gave him a distinct advantage, allowing him to seamlessly blend precision with creativity.
Central to Doran’s growth as a designer was the mentorship of Professor Erich Doubek, Chair of the Art Department. Doubek, a steadfast presence throughout Doran’s college years, offered both critique and encouragement at pivotal moments. “He knew when to push me and when to support me,” Doran reflected. “Even now, I still reach out to him for feedback on projects. That relationship has been invaluable.”
