Ryan Doran ‘22 is swiftly carving out a reputation as a rising talent in the world of graphic design and animation.

Barely two years into his career, he has already garnered national attention for his work on the Hartford Public Library rebranding project, a collaboration with Miranda Creative that earned a coveted spot in Graphic Design USA's American Graphic Design Awards issue. His team’s work on the project was recognized for excellence in motion design and branding—a testament to Doran’s growing expertise in bringing brands to life through animation.

Yet, a future in design was not always in the cards. Raised in Connecticut, Doran attended a technical high school where he initially set his sights on architectural design. “I always thought I wanted to be an architect,” he said. It was a late shift in focus during high school that steered him toward graphic design—a field that fused his artistic instincts with his fascination for technology. This newfound passion led him to Emmanuel College, a choice he describes as a perfect confluence of location, community, and opportunity.

The Emmanuel Experience: Crafting a Foundation

“Emmanuel was the perfect balance of everything I was looking for,” Doran said. “The location in Boston, the size of the campus, and the small class sizes made it feel like a place where I could really grow and thrive.” The college’s fine arts program, rooted in traditional art forms like drawing and sculpture, provided a crucial foundation for his design work. His technical experience from high school—hand drafting and mastering design software—gave him a distinct advantage, allowing him to seamlessly blend precision with creativity.

Central to Doran’s growth as a designer was the mentorship of Professor Erich Doubek, Chair of the Art Department. Doubek, a steadfast presence throughout Doran’s college years, offered both critique and encouragement at pivotal moments. “He knew when to push me and when to support me,” Doran reflected. “Even now, I still reach out to him for feedback on projects. That relationship has been invaluable.”

Doran’s career gained momentum soon after graduation when he joined Miranda Creative, a design and advertising agency based in his home state. It was there that he distinguished himself as a lead animator, playing a key role in the Hartford Public Library rebrand—a project that not only won awards from the Connecticut Art Directors Club and the Hatch Awards but also underscored Doran’s growing expertise in animation.

“Animation brings concepts to life in ways static images can’t,” he said. “It’s become one of my strengths, and clients are always excited by how it adds movement and energy to a brand.”

Despite his rapid ascent, Doran remains thoughtful about his trajectory. He is currently immersed in a new high-profile venture: the branding for a forthcoming park at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London, Connecticut. “Projects like these—for libraries, museums, public spaces—are the most inspiring,” he said. “They push me to think boldly and create work that resonates with the community.”

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Doran envisions a steady climb within the design world, with aspirations of one day stepping into the role of senior art director or creative director. But for now, he remains firmly rooted in the present—committed to refining his craft, embracing new challenges, and expanding his creative horizons.

Asked what advice he would offer to aspiring designers, Doran spoke of resilience and self-discovery. “Graphic design is competitive and demanding, but if you love it, it’s worth it,” he said. “Figure out what sets you apart—whether it's versatility or a unique specialty—and never stop learning.”
