President & Leadership

At Alumni Weekend 2026, President Beth Ross shared a clear message: Emmanuel is moving forward with purpose, confidence, and real momentum—and alumni are essential to what comes next. The full text of her address is below.

Good afternoon, everyone. It is such a joy to welcome you home to Emmanuel. And I do mean home. For so many of you, this is not just where you went to college. It is where something happened.

It is where you met lifelong friends. Where a professor or a Sister saw something in you before you fully saw it in yourself. Where you found your voice, your vocation, your confidence, your faith, your purpose. For some of you, it is where you met your spouse. For all of you, it is where the course of your life changed.

That is the power of Emmanuel.

This afternoon, I’ve chosen not to give you a typical “state of the College” address. I want to do something a little different. And I have to give credit where credit is due. Last year, one of our Trustees, Marian Ryan, a proud member of the Class of 1976, delivered a Commencement address that many of us still remember. Not only because of what she said, but because she understood something powerful: sometimes an object can help an idea stay with you.

She used props in a way that was funny, wise, and unforgettable. So, inspired by her, I brought something with me today: a sneaker. I know, very presidential! But I brought it because I want to make one thing very clear:

Emmanuel is moving.

Not standing still, not drifting, not waiting for the future to happen to us. And not running scared. We are moving forward with purpose.

A Confident, Evidence-Filled “Yes”

And in this moment in higher education, that matters. Anyone who reads the news knows this is a challenging time for small private colleges. Students and families are asking harder questions. Alumni are asking honest questions. And they should.

Is this college strong? Does it know who it is? Is it preparing students for the world they are entering? Does it still matter?

My answer is yes. Not a vague yes. Not a sentimental yes. A clear, confident, evidence-filled yes.

When I make the case for Emmanuel, I can point to our campus, our faculty, our location in the heart of Boston, our focus on the whole student, our internships, our research opportunities, and our partnerships.

But the strongest case for Emmanuel is sitting in this Chapel.

You are not simply our history. You are proof of what Emmanuel does. You are the teachers, doctors, scientists, lawyers, executives, public servants, parents, artists, advocates, leaders, and neighbors who show what happens when a student is known, challenged, supported, and formed with purpose.

Emmanuel at Its Best

That is not nostalgia. That is evidence. And today, that same Emmanuel spirit is alive in our students.

Just a few weeks ago, the members of the Class of 2026 crossed the Commencement stage and stepped into the next chapters of their lives. Some are beginning full-time roles with organizations such as Fidelity Investments, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, PwC, the Boston Public Schools, and the Boston Celtics. Others are heading to graduate programs at institutions including Boston College, Boston University, and Brown.

But beyond the names and destinations, there is something even more important: there is a pulse to this place, a vibe that is equal parts striving and joy.

You can feel it in the labs, on the Quad, at athletic competitions, in theatre productions, in senior presentations, in service, in internships, and in the relationships between students and the faculty and staff who know them well.

This is Emmanuel now – and it’s Emmanuel at its best: personal and ambitious, mission-centered and practical, rooted in values and connected to the world.

These have always been Emmanuel’s strengths. But now we have to connect those strengths to the future with greater intention. That is the work underway.

At Emmanuel, our answer is not to abandon the liberal arts and sciences. Our answer is to show why they matter more than ever when they are connected to experience, mentoring, ethical formation, and real-world opportunity.

President Beth Ross, Ed.D.

Momentum to Meet the Moment

We are focused on student success as a shared responsibility. We are building stronger pathways from classroom to career, because families are right to ask about value.

At Emmanuel, our answer is not to abandon the liberal arts and sciences. Our answer is to show why they matter more than ever when they are connected to experience, mentoring, ethical formation, and real-world opportunity.

We are investing in programs that meet the moment, including Biotechnology, Finance, Marketing, Global and Public Health, and Nursing.

We are deepening our partnerships in Boston because our location is not just a backdrop. It is part of the education. Boston is one of our greatest classrooms.

And we are strengthening the student experience because students today need connection, confidence, clear pathways, and support that is coordinated, personal, and strong.

This sneaker is not here because Emmanuel is sprinting in every direction. It is here because Emmanuel is moving intentionally in the right direction.

And we are doing this work with clear eyes, aligning our strategy, enrollment, programs, student success efforts, and financial decisions so that Emmanuel’s mission is not only inspiring, but sustainable.

We are beginning to see real evidence of that momentum. Moody’s recently revised Emmanuel’s outlook to stable and affirmed our investment-grade status. Deposits from students entering in the fall are ahead of this time last year. Deposits from transfer students are up 12 percent, and we’re seeing growth in Nursing, Health Sciences, Neuroscience, and Elementary Education. And with a month to go in the giving year, Emmanuel has raised nearly $3 million overall, with the Emmanuel Fund reaching $2 million, 60 percent ahead of last year.

Becoming More Fully Who We Are

These are not victory laps. They are signals. The work is gaining traction. And as Emmanuel gains traction, we are not becoming less like ourselves. We are becoming more fully Emmanuel.

Through all of that, we are holding tightly to what makes Emmanuel, Emmanuel: the Sisters’ legacy, faith and reason, service, the dignity of every person, and the belief that education should form the whole person.

That is why I am confident about this moment. Not because the challenges are small. They are not.

I am confident because Emmanuel has what so many institutions are trying to find: a clear mission, a powerful location, extraordinary alumni, talented students, devoted faculty and staff, strong partners, and a community that understands that Emmanuel has never been simply a place you attend.

It is a place that stays with you.

And it began that way.

Emmanuel was not founded in easy times. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur created this College in the aftermath of war and pandemic, before women in this country had secured the right to vote. They saw beyond the limits of their time and created something bold, faithful, and enduring.

Fittingly, as our nation marks its 250th anniversary, Emmanuel has been recognized by the Commonwealth as a “Massachusetts First,” as the first Catholic college for women in New England.

That same spirit has carried Emmanuel across generations, through women like Sister Anne Cyril Delaney, Sister Marie Augusta Neal, President Emerita Sister Janet Eisner, and so many faculty, Sisters, staff, and alumni who believed this College could meet its moment without losing its soul.

I know that I stand on the shoulders of giants. Emmanuel is here today because of the courage of the Sisters, the leadership of those who came before us, and the steadfast dedication and generosity of alumni and friends like you.

We need the world to see what you already know: Emmanuel is alive. Emmanuel is moving. Emmanuel is forming students for lives of meaning, leadership, service, and impact. And Emmanuel’s future will be stronger because you are part of it.

President Beth Ross, Ed.D.

You Are a Part of Emmanuel’s Future

And that is our work now: to move forward without losing who we are. To grow with discipline. To innovate with purpose. To offer competitive programs and remain committed to access and affordability.

That is the both-and from which Emmanuel’s future will be built. And it cannot be built by the College alone. That is where you come in.

Alumni are not spectators to Emmanuel’s future. You are part of it.

When you tell your Emmanuel story, encourage a student to consider Emmanuel, open a door to an employer or graduate school, mentor a student, make an introduction, or make a gift, you strengthen this College.

That matters. Because we cannot be a hidden gem forever. I am grateful that people call Emmanuel a hidden gem, but I am ready for Emmanuel to be much less hidden.

Our students deserve that. Our alumni deserve that. Our mission deserves that.

You’ll be hearing more in the months ahead, but for right now I can tell you this: others are seeing what we see: an Emmanuel with purpose, momentum, and a future worthy of investment.

We’re Keeping the Light On

Just outside the Chapel, you’ll see the early unfolding of another part of our story: the renewal of the Chapel Portico.

The portico has been Emmanuel’s iconic front door for more than a century. It has been the backdrop for Commencement photos, wedding pictures, reunion gatherings, selfies, quiet prayers, and moments of real triumph.

And one of the lines describing this restoration effort is, “We’re keeping the light on.” I love that. Because that is what this work is really about. Stewardship. Welcome. Continuity. Confidence.

We are keeping the light on for the students who will come next. We are caring for what has carried us. And we are preparing Emmanuel’s front door for its second century.

But this afternoon, I am not beginning with an ask for money. I am beginning with an invitation.

Help us tell the story. Send us your photos. Send us your memories. Tell us what happened for you here and what Emmanuel made possible.

Because we need the world to see what you already know: Emmanuel is alive. Emmanuel is moving. Emmanuel is forming students for lives of meaning, leadership, service, and impact. And Emmanuel’s future will be stronger because you are part of it.

This sneaker is a reminder that Emmanuel is moving. We know who we are. We know where we are going. And we want you moving with us.

So welcome home. And welcome to Emmanuel now. Still Emmanuel. More than ever.
