The Emmanuel College School of Business & Management hosted the General Manager of the Boston Red Sox, Brian O’Halloran, as a part of their Business Unplugged speaker series on February 6th in the Janet M. Library Lecture Hall.
As General Manager, O'Halloran oversees the Red Sox baseball operations department in conjunction with the Chief Baseball Officer, overseeing all facets of the Red Sox baseball operations including Major League operations, player acquisitions, scouting, player development and contract negotiations. During the event, he spoke to Emmanuel students about his academic and professional paths and more specifically, how his liberal arts college education prepared him for success in Major League Baseball. He encouraged students in particular to focus on their writing skills, a craft strengthened within a well-rounded liberal arts and science education. He noted that he continues to emphasize strong writing abilities with job candidates to this day, referring to it as a "lost skill."
The neighboring Red Sox and their home at Fenway Park is not only a popular entertainment venue for Emmanuel students, but also a key opportunity as students look to gain real-world internship and career experience. In fact, the Boston Red Sox organization is one of the top first employers for graduates of Emmanuel's School of Business & Management since 2015.
