In collaboration with the Colleges of the Fenway, Emmanuel College hosted its first esports tournament matches in the Cardinal Cushing Library on February 4th, introducing students to the College’s new esports offerings.
The first round of one-on-one bouts between students competing in the game Super Smash Bros was projected onto large screens in the Janet M. Daley Library Lecture Hall and was live streamed on Twitch, a popular video game streaming platform. Competition resumes February 11th and continues over five weeks culminating in a bracket style Championship event on March 31st. In addition to the competitive matches, open play is offered during the events and is available to all Colleges of the Fenway students.
Emmanuel is planning to field a competitive team for the Fall 2020 semester. As for the remainder of the Spring semester, events such as an NBA 2K tournament will coincide with college basketball's March Madness tournament and a NFL draft viewing party will be combined with Madden NFL 20 gameplay in late April.
In the following weeks, more information will be released on the esports program and how to become involved, as well as dates for future events. Those who would like to watch the Super Smash Bros tournaments can do so by following along with live streams or watching in person in the Library Lecture Hall on Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m.
