Diane Shea

Interim Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Diane Shea is an Associate Dean and Professor of Nursing at Emmanuel College.  She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Doctorate (PhD) from Boston College, a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration from UCLA, and a Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management from Harvard University.

Dr. Shea is on several Nursing Advisory Boards, served on the planning committees for the American Association of Colleges of Nurses Conferences, and was a lead member of the Interprofessional Education Coalition helping to coordinate yearly simulations for over 500 students from 10 different colleges and universities.  Dr. Shea reviews abstracts for the NLN conference and the International Meeting on Simulation in Health Care.  She helped initiate and ran a monthly group: Pushing On: Supporting Moms after Pregnancy Loss, helping to address community needs.  Dr. Shea served in several capacities in the Sigma Theta Tau International organization and is a member of the Massachusetts Association of Colleges of Nursing.

In addition Dr. Shea produced a sociodrama that addressed college drinking using a harm reduction approach. The sociodrama was presented to a live audience. She also developed an interactive DVD entitled, "Engaging Students to Learn and Self Reflect About Alcohol Use." It consisted of five vignettes, facilitator questions, and a "Did You Know?" section.

Dr. Shea’s research focuses on academic practice partnerships, interprofessional education, and college drinking.

  • 2015 Awarded $49,578 from the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education for the proposal for Academic-Practice Partnerships developing a model to encourage incumbent nurses to advance their education inclusive of increasing diversity workforce addressing social, cultural, racial, gender, and disability.

  • 2011 Award $9,935 by Research Initiation Funds for 2011/12 to provide support for research project entitled Interdisciplinary Service Delivery Model. The amount of the award is $9,935.
  • 2011 Awarded $4,700 by Lackawanna Drug and Alcohol Commission to conduct research on the Effectiveness of a Sociodrama Addressing College Drinking.

  • 2009 Awarded $5,400 to conduct research and Promote Health with Mothers Who Had Miscarriages, trying to conceive again. Educational and Support group model addressing bereavement. Collaborative money provided by University of Scranton and Marywood University.
  • 2009 Awarded $1,000 to produce an Interactive DVD addressing College Drinking by the Cultural Affairs Committee for cultural affairs programming. 
  • 2009 Applied for funding for a project to produce an interactive DVD addressing College Drinking. I was awarded $2,500 from Marywood University.
  • 2008 Principal Investigator Awarded $150,000 "Preparing Tomorrow's Nurses" grant. Support the Nursing Simulation Lab, tutoring at risk students, and hiring actors to be patients for students to perform health assessments. 
  • 2007 Collaborated on a $3 million, 3 year, NIH Workforce Diversity Grant helping students who are economically challenged and/or from a diverse background, enroll and succeed in the Marywood Nursing Program. Notified June 2008 did not receive. Scored 89.
  • 2006 Awarded an Instructional Fee Grant with fellow nursing colleague, for $120,000. This money was used to update the nursing skills lab, buying equipment to facilitate simulation, critical thinking activities for nursing students. East Stroudsburg University, East Stroudsburg Pa.

Dr. Shea's research also focuses on academic-practice partnerships, interprofessional education, and practice, and innovative teaching to facilitate student learning, incorporating student actors, in vignettes.
