How do governments and nonprofit organizations seek to influence or control the behavior of the economy in the U.S. and around the world?

What is the relationship between rich and poor countries? How do we measure the cost, benefits, and ease of implementation for policies around environmental conservation and climate change? Within this major, you will gain the real world quantitative and analytical skills necessary to participate in and shape public policy debates around such topics as poverty, crime, and economic development in urban cities; the access, equity, and efficiency of heath care; and policy issues surrounding our environment and society.

Requirements for a B.A. in Economics with a Concentration in Economic Policy:

In addition to courses required for the economics major, students take 12 credits (three courses, two of which must be at the 3000-level or higher) from courses listed below.

  • ECON2205 Urban Economics
  • ECON3109/FINAN3109 Public Finance 
  • ECON3113 Economics of Health Care
  • ECON3115 Economics of the Environment

 At the completion of the Economic Policy Concentration, students will:

  1. Demonstrate critical thinking using economic analysis, quantitative reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
  2. Communicate effectively: in written, oral and graphical formats, using concepts and analytical tools economics.
  3. Have lifelong learning skills, including how to locate and use primary data, how to understand and evaluate current events and new ideas.
