Emmanuel is the only college in the country with a private pharmaceutical research facility right on campus.
Since Merck Research Laboratories-Boston opened its 12-story, 300,000-square-foot facility on Emmanuel's campus in 2004, students and faculty have benefited from this unique collaboration in a number of ways: through internship and research opportunities, alumni events, and more.
Each year, Emmanuel students participate in internships at Merck, gaining hands-on skills and experience that can lead to full-time employment following graduation. In addition, the endowed Merck Scholarship provides support for students majoring in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience and Biostatistics.
“Matthew Casarano '26, Biology major"Being able to access that internship at Merck through Emmanuel gave me a huge advantage among my peers, and allowed me to distinguish myself in my field of study. It really speaks volumes about the relationship between the College and Merck."

Merck's research facility sits inside the same neighborhood as Dana-Farber, Boston Children's, Brigham & Women's, and Harvard Medical School — and Emmanuel students aren't just learning nearby — they're building experience within it.
Emmanuel's partnership with Merck Research Laboratories-Boston provides current Emmanuel students, typically biology or chemistry majors, the chance to apply for a summer internship at the pharmaceutical company.
No, but it builds experience that can help students build toward one. The Merck internship allows students to gain hands-on skills and experience with lab techniques that connects to their major and interests — a valuable opportunity and resume builder that can help them secure a job offer anywhere in their field, not just at Merck.
On Emmanuel College's own campus — inside a dedicated 12-story, 300,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2004. That makes Emmanuel the only college in the country with a private pharmaceutical research facility located directly on its campus. The facility also sits within Boston's Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA), alongside major hospitals and research institutions, giving Emmanuel students access to internships and research opportunities that extend well beyond Merck itself.
