The Counseling Center at Emmanuel serves the undergraduate student body, providing short-term counseling, both individual and group, outreach and prevention. The Center is directed by a licensed psychologist and is staffed by 2.5 licensed clinicians, a part-time consulting psychiatrist, and an office manager/triage coordinator. The Center usually accepts two trainees each academic year who function as an integral part of our staff.
The Center operates from a wellness and a student development model and supports the mission of a Catholic college committed to social justice and the value of education to change the world. We see a wide-range of presenting concerns and a diverse group of students. The Center collaborates closely with other offices on campus.
The Center is perceived as a welcoming place for staff and clients and we maintain an informal atmosphere that seems best for our students. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, staff members are held to the highest professional standards and expectations in their clinical work and their supervision of trainees.
The Counseling Center graduate practicum/intern position requires the trainee to work 24-28 hours per week for the entire academic year. We accept students from an accredited program in counseling, psychology or related field. Our trainees often have master’s degrees or equivalent. Experience working with college students is preferred but not required.
Viable candidates will have completed appropriate coursework and have knowledge of counseling theory and basic counseling skills. Clinical experience, including at least one practicum or equivalent, is necessary. Audiotaping is required for all sessions and audio recorders are provided. Supervisors may vary in their emphasis on the use of tapes during supervision but listen to sessions on a regular basis. Psychological testing is not done on a routine basis, although trainees with an interest in this area can work with their supervisor to identify appropriate clients for testing.
Trainees are responsible for managing a caseload of 12-15 students per semester and conducting one group or educational workshop per semester. The intern helps with outreach programming and may be required to attend an evening outreach event. The Counseling Center uses Titanium, an electronic medical record scheduling and documentation system. Interns are expected to manage their schedules and complete documentation in a professional and timely manner.
Interns should plan their schedules between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Depending on space, some coordination of schedules between interns is usually necessary. The intern is required to attend case consultation meetings on Mondays and staff meetings when possible. In addition, the intern attends weekly meetings with the College of The Fenway (COF) interns for peer supervision and training.
Trainees must carry their own liability insurance and will be asked to provide a copy of coverage for office records.
The Center takes seriously its commitment to training and to helping interns grow as professionals. As we are a small staff, trainees work closely with all members of the counseling center who maintain an open door policy. Weekly supervision is provided by staff who is most appropriate based on the student’s degree program. Doctoral level students are supervised by a licensed psychologist and masters level students are supervised by either a licensed mental health counselor or a licensed psychologist.
