Message from the Vice President of Student Affairs

Student Affairs - LeadershipEmmanuel is a very special place—‘a gem among giants' as the father of one of our students suggested—the only small Catholic college in America's college town. We recognize our uniqueness and we hope that you will too as you read about our student-centered services in a thriving Boston location.

Academics are the priority on campus and as you peruse these webpages you will find support services for academic success and programs designed to promote intellectual and professional growth. The college years are some of the most formative years of life and we encourage students to take advantage of these enrichment opportunities.

Emmanuel is a vibrant campus, with 84% of our student body making its mark in student life as student-athletes, club and organization members and student leaders. If you are a student or prospective student, please familiarize yourself with our student organizations, Division III sports teams and mission and ministry opportunities. Research shows that students who are engaged in the life of their campus earn higher grades and report greater college satisfaction. We encourage every student to complement their academic life with co-curricular involvement.

Service to others is central to the student experience. Our founders, the Sisters of Notre Dame (SND) are recognized worldwide for their service to the poor and the SND mission is alive on campus. In 2012-2013 students contributed more than 36,000 hours of volunteer service. Our service record has been recognized three years in a row with distinction by the White House with the President's Community Service and Service Learning Award. Please check out the ways that you can make a difference.

Students describe community as a hallmark of their Emmanuel experience. Every student at the College is important. Every student can expect to be respected. Evidence of this commitment can be found in our statement on community standards and student code of conduct as well as other policies and procedures detailed on these webpages. A safe, respectful and healthy community is the foundation of student life at Emmanuel.

Emmanuel is about relationships and students can expect to find responsive and supportive professionals in Student Affairs. During times of challenge, students may want to utilize the confidential services of the Offices of Counseling, Health and Campus Ministry. The College provides 24/7 professional coverage through a professional on-call system accessed through Campus Safety. A student or a friend of a student who needs help should never hesitate to call.

Finally, before you leave our website you may want to see how students take advantage of the College's Boston location, not only for cultural, recreational and social opportunities but for career opportunities as well. Emmanuel students are more likely to participate in an internship than students on other campuses: 89% versus 53% at other private colleges. They make Boston their extended classroom preparing them for lives of meaning and purpose.

Thank you for your interest in the student life experience at Emmanuel. If you were unable to find what you are looking for on these webpages, please call my office. My assistant Mary Anne Murphy or I would be happy to assist you.
