Bio

Dr. Miriam Gates has over a decade of experience as a classroom teacher and educational researcher with a focus on STEM education. As a classroom teacher, Dr. Gates had the opportunity to gain invaluable practice experience in multiple settings across the US. In her work as a researcher, Dr. Gates supported professional learning for in-service teachers focusing on developing mathematical habits of mind and considering issues of equity in mathematical contexts. As part of these studies, Dr. Gates applied both qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to understand the outcomes from these professional learning sessions.

After her experiences in teaching and research, Dr. Gates earned her PhD from Boston College in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on mathematics education. Dr. Gates's work has focused on approaches to inquiry in STEM education with attention to issues of equity that arise in these contexts. Her research interests include inquiry approaches to teaching and learning in STEM education, teacher education, and how (in)equity emerges in STEM education contexts. Dr. Gates is currently undertaking a research study to understand approaches to mathematical inquiry that teachers have taken in response to online teaching necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
