Emmanuel College Names Jackie MacMullan as 2018 Commencement Speaker
Nationally-recognized sports columnist, author and television broadcaster Jackie MacMullan will deliver the Commencement address and receive an honorary degree at Emmanuel College's 96th Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 12, 2018.
Ms. MacMullan, a columnist on ESPN.com, appears weekly on ESPN's "Around the Horn" television show, and is regularly featured on local Boston news and radio stations. Previously a sports columnist and editor for The Boston Globe for more than 25 years, Ms. MacMullan was honored with multiple national awards from the Associated Press for her investigative reporting and feature writing. She co-authored a book with NBA legends Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, which became a New York Times best-seller.
Ms. MacMullan carries the distinction of being the first and only woman to receive the Curt Gowdy Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame for a career of excellence in basketball writing and reporting, which is one of many honors she has received over the years. She is a cum laude graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where she played four years of basketball. She was the recipient of both the Robert Perry Student-Athlete of the Year Award and the Dean Williamson Award, given to that student that "excels in scholarship, athletics and loyalty to the University." She was inducted into the University of New Hampshire's Hall of Honor in 2001. She is a graduate of Westwood (Mass.) High School.
For many years Ms. MacMullan has been heavily involved in charitable work for Huntington's Disease and was honored in the fall of 2007 by its New England chapter for her tireless efforts. The New England Patriots awarded her its prestigious Ron Burton Sr. Community Service Award in 2009 for her charitable endeavors, which also includes work on behalf of the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club, the New England Hemophilia Association, and the Shooting Touch foundation.
