Class of 1943

Ruth Millard Powers passed away on February 11, 2006. Her son, Mark, lovingly provided the following account of Ruth's active and fascinating life. Needless to say, her family is heartbroken over the loss of their beloved Ruth. Ruth was born in Peabody, MA in 1922 and schooled in Salem. She was Emmanuel's very first Spanish language major and graduated summa cum laude in 1943. After graduation, Ruth moved to Washington, D.C., where she was quickly hired by the Signal Core as an official "Code Breaker." She married her childhood sweetheart, Frank Charles Power, in 1949. They had four children together: James, Joseph, Mark, and Francis. In 1961 Ruth reentered the workforce, becoming one of the first female claims adjusters at Adjusters Inc. The 1960s and 70s afforded Ruth and family with many travel opportunities. Her husband, Frank, was employed by Delta Airlines and Ruth's best friend, Al Jazyka, was in the Diplomatic Service and was stationed throughout the world. Destinations included many U.S. cities, Portugal, Jamaica, Nassau and a month-long tour of Europe with the whole family in 1968, culminating with an official invitation by the U.S.S.R. to Moscow. Ruth and her family relocated to Atlanta, GA in the 1970s and, although she was a reluctant southerner initially, Ruth developed and maintained a fondness for the South for the rest of her life. The family returned to New England in 1978. Sadly, Ruth's husband, Frank, died only a year later, in 1979. Ever resilient, Ruth became a real estate agent in 1981, bought a 150 year-old house, and became a doting grandmother of her five grandchildren. She also began to travel again. Trips included a solitary 1988 trip to Spain, a month-long tour driving herself from Vienna (to experience her beloved Mozart) to Venice, and a 1989 trip to Spain and Morocco with her son, Mark. In 1995, Ruth was struck by a car and went through extensive rehabilitation, but she prevailed like a true survivor. In 1998, Ruth was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and found strength in family, God, friends, arts and crafts, and travel. The new century brought a great number of "mini" trips with Mark as her travel companion. Before becoming ill in March 2005, Ruth was quietly creative. She drew, painted, and became quite a craftsman. As always, her music remained a constant throughout her life. March/April 2006

Anna Noone McDonald and her husband, Pete, are keeping busy in Paulsbo, WA, while one of her daughters is making a name for herself in the fashion industry. July/August 2005

Murial Hardiman Tully enjoys her bridge games but has put the tennis racquet and golf clubs on the back burner. July/August 2005

Bernardine Travers Rines and family are doing well and enjoying life at the seashore. July/August 2005

Catherine Reardon Steele and husband, Bob, have moved to an assisted living complex on the Cape near Hyannis. They are enjoying their new living quarters. July/August 2005

Eunice Kelley Yost and family had an addition to the family with the birth of their first great grandchild, Joseph Logan Kraus, just before Christmas last year. Their 14 grandchildren keep them busy. The Yosts have one grandchild in elementary school, one in junior high and two entering college this year at Boston College and the University of New Hampshire. In addition, one grandchild graduated from Boston College this year, one is entering his senior year at Cornell in the fall, and finally, one is starting at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (the same one who took a solo trip to La Paz, Bolivia on his bicycle). July/August 2005

Eunice wishes her class a great year and says, "It would be nice to hear from some of you '43ers. Send in some news... What's happening in your house?" July/August 2005

Anna Noone McDonald and her husband, Pete, are enjoying the mild climate of Paulsbo, WA. They live west of the Cascade Range, which keeps the weather on the mild side. Anna volunteers at the Office of the Insurance Commission, training volunteers to help with the prescription drug benefit scheduled to go into effect in 2006. Anna and Pete are planning a trip to California in March 2005 to visit their daughter, Susan, who is retiring after many successful years as a social worker. Susan is presently a supervisor in Los Angeles County, overseeing a staff of 700 people. Now she wants to do something different, although exactly what, she is not sure.
