Admission Requirements

Computer Literacy Test

Emmanuel College requires computer literacy for a bachelor's degree. Students have two options:

  • Successfully completing a computer literacy competency exam (no credits/no cost)
  • Successfully completing MGMT 6109 Introduction to Computer Science (4 credits)

The computer literacy competency exam is taken at Emmanuel's Boston campus and consists of four parts:

  1. Computer knowledge - tests basic knowledge of hardware, software, networks, virus information, Windows and Macintosh operating systems, keyboard shortcuts, file recognition, memory, storage, audio formats and copyright knowledge.
  2. The Internet - tests knowledge of web browsers, URLs, internet service providers, bookmarks/favorites, search engines, security, cookies and firewalls.
  3. Microsoft Word - a simulation where students format, auto-format, insert dates, page numbers, columns, tables, page and section breaks, bullet items, change margins, cut, copy and paste.
  4. Microsoft Excel - a simulation where students open workbooks, insert rows, columns, create formulas, use functions, format cells and ranges of cells, center across columns, rename worksheets, create charts and insert new worksheets.

Students will use Internet Explorer on an IBM machine. Students scoring 70% or above in all four categories fulfill the requirement. Students scoring below this level should take the Introduction to Computer Science course (MGMT 6109). There is a 2-credit online Excel course offered through the traditional programs if students need help in that area particularly.

Nursing students must complete this computer literacy requirement, either by completing the competency exam or the MGMT 6109 course, prior to beginning their clinical coursework.

This test will be administered at the Boston campus. Students have 75 minutes to complete the test. To reserve a space, call:
