Co-founder of Psychology SURGE
After cross-registering for a biology course, I realized that I really liked science. During the spring of my junior year, I changed my major from IT to psychology and spent my summer working in Emmanuel's laboratory. It was great–having to find the answers to my own questions was rewarding. With my lab experience, I got an internship at Children's Hospital Boston and had a paper published. These will help when applying to grad school, where I will study to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner.
In fall 2010, five of us psychology majors started an organization called Psychology SURGE (Student Undergraduate Resources and Guidance at Emmanuel) to help students in our department navigate the classroom and research and internship opportunities. Our first event was a lecture by Brooke Katz, an RN who deals with her own schizophrenia. To have these personal talks, to have something presented that's not so textbook, makes all the difference when you are a student.
