During the week of March 7th, a team of 17 students and three faculty and staff advisors from the Emmanuel College chapter of Habitat for Humanity (H4H) participated in Habitat's Collegiate Challenge, spending their spring break volunteering in Woodland Park, Colorado.
This trip was the second-ever SGA-sponsored Spring Break service trip for the group-last year's destination was Taos, New Mexico. The team spent several days in "the City Above the Clouds," named for its elevation at 9,000 feet above sea level. They worked on three homes for families in the communities of Divide and Cripple Creek, including the addition of wood siding and exterior paint.
"I continue to be amazed by the H4H student group and their efforts to organize these kinds of ambitious outreach activities," said faculty advisor and EC Assistant Professor of Biology Jason Kuehner. "The student executive board organized this trip almost entirely on their own, petitioning the Student Government Association to help fund the cost, organizing an applicant selection process, and coordinating the travel, budget and activities for the entire group."
In addition to working at Habitat sites, the group enjoyed time hiking with wolves in an area wildlife sanctuary, exploring Garden of the Gods Park and Rainbow Falls, and visiting the Cheyenne Mountain zoo.
"This year's trip surpassed my expectations," said Keith Baillargeon '16, president of Emmanuel's H4H chapter. "Not because of what we learned from last year's experience in Taos or because we faced less obstacles planning the trip, but because I was reminded once again that the students at Emmanuel College are the warmest and most giving people I have had the pleasure to know and serve with. I hope they, and others, at EC continue to travel and serve with Habitat to impact lives and inspire change."
Students and staff participating who participated in the trip: Executive Board members, Keith Baillargeon '16, Paige Emery '18, Noor Ul Ann '17, Shauna Canavan '18 and Kylie Scott '18; students Jeffrey Zakrzewski '17, Emily Dyer '17, Micaela Almeida '19, Kevin Petterson '18, Emma Zingg '18, Krysta Marinelli '16, Sara Rodrigues '17, Sean Walsh '16, Caitlyn Clausen '17, Simone Thibault '17, Maha Abdallah '19 and Julia Curiale '19; and advisors Assistant Professor of Biology Jason Kuehner, Facilities Coordinator Katy Mulvaney, and Assistant Director of Residence Life Alissa Lynch.
