Christine Cuddemi '13- Internship: Harvard University and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Christine knew she wanted to attend Emmanuel starting her sophomore year in high school. She became interested in biochemistry and genetics and then read about Emmanuel's partnership with Merck Research Laboratories - and knew the College was the right place for her.

"My professors at Emmanuel have really helped me focus my career path, from introducing me to genetic counseling, a field of science with which I was previously unfamiliar, to helping me define and set my career goals," she said. "Emmanuel's reputation in the sciences and its partnerships with the institutions in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area make studying here a unique, challenging and rewarding experience. I've been offered many opportunities that aren't readily available to undergraduates, even at larger schools."

Christine's first internship in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University revolved around research working with proteins and was all lab-based and very hands on. At Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, she spent 10 weeks working in bioformatics, which was computer-based and very different from the lab-based study that she had been doing. The latter internship gave her valuable experience, but reinforced her passion for research and hands-on lab work. Afterward, Christine went back to her mentor at Harvard and explained that she was enthusiastic about the work she'd done in his department. He asked her to return for another yearlong internship.

After she graduates this spring, Christine plans to spend a year shadowing professionals in her field and gaining meaningful work experience before pursuing a master's program in genetic counseling.

"I stepped into the labs of some of the most prestigious research institutions in the world and was confident I could hold my own," she said of her internship experiences. "My ultimate goal is to come back here to Boston, where my journey started, to work in one of the hospitals. They are the best in the country."
