Faculty Highlights for November 2013

Assistant Professor of English Monique-Adelle Callahan presented her paper, "Poetry and the Ethics of Global Citizenship," at the Annual Conference of the Society for Comparative Literature and the Arts held October 18th -19th in Greensboro, N.C.

Associate Professor of Art Cynthia Fowler chaired and served as discussant on the panel "Gendering Native Modernisms" at the biannual conference of the Native American Art Studies Association in Denver, Colo. on October 20th.

Assistant Professor of Sociology Janese Free had her article, "The importance of rule fairness: The influence of school bonds on at-risk students in an alternative school," accepted for publication in the journal Educational Studies.

On October 24th, Assistant Professor of Education Sister Karen Hokanson SND and her first year seminar class, "Technologies, Social Media and Society," hosted an open house for senior citizens at the Timothy Smith Network Cyber Café. Residents from the Roxbury neighborhood gathered to celebrate the tenth year of the Timothy Smith Network.

The Carolyn A. Lynch Institute, directed by Sister Karen, in conjunction with the Center for Science Education, launched its fall professional development programs for educators on Saturday, October 27th. The Lynch Institute provides a range of collaborative programs and services that enhance the professional development of urban teachers. Over 40 educators participated in the fall workshops. Workshops included: "Making Mathematics Accessible to All Learners," "Common Core for English Language Art," "Technology to Enhance Content Mastery" and "Using Models to Teach Elementary Science."

Assistant Professor of Biology Jason Kuehner co-authored a research paper entitled "DNA damage induces targeted, genome-wide variation of poly(A) sites in budding yeast," which was published in the October issue of Genome Research, 23: 1690-1703.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Helen MacDonald published two articles during the month of October, cited:

On October 19th, psychology major Elizabeth Baxter '15 and Helen MacDonald presented a poster, "Association between dispositional mindfulness and academic delay of gratification in female college students," at the New England Psychological Association's annual meeting in Bridgeport, Conn.

On October 24th , Associate Professor of Economics and Department Chair Rebecca Moryl, along with colleagues Patrick Ryan Murphy and Lucia Farriss of Saint Leo University, presented "Putting Yourself in the Picture: Using Student-Generated Photos to Enhance Introductory Economics Courses" at the 9th annual Economics Teaching Conference in Austin, Texas.

Robert McCall '13 had his short story, "Living the Life," published in The Cat's Meow for Writers and Readers. The story was written in Associate Professor of English Mary Beth Pope's ENGL 2507 Fiction Writing class.

On October 22nd, Associate Professor of Mathematics Kim Sofronas and the students from her Elementary Mathematics Method class participated in a family event at the John M. Tobin Elementary School. They shared math activities, websites and apps with attending families to educate them about resources they can use at home to support math learning.
