What We Do

Institutional Research at Emmanuel College oversees a variety of responsibilities including data integrity and management, external reporting, survey administration and support, and research and analysis.

Institutional research, as a function, differs in reach and scope from one institution to another. At Emmanuel, IR is responsible for a diverse array of activities:

  • Data Integrity and Management - IR supports various data collection, storage and clean-up efforts at the College. IR maintains a growing, centralized library of historical institutional data and seeks to enhance data fluency at the institution.
  • External Reporting - IR works with departments across the College to comply with requests from various external parties: the federal government and local government, our accreditation body (NEASC), numerous publishers of online and print materials (e.g. U.S. News and World Report, College Board), and other groups.
  • Survey Administration and Support - Emmanuel College routinely surveys its community to enhance its self-understanding and to inform decision-making. IR administers several national student surveys at the College: the Higher Education Research Institute's CIRP Freshmen Survey and College Senior Survey, the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory, and the National Survey of Student Engagement developed by Indiana University Bloomington. IR also coordinates the development, administration and analysis of annual surveys of graduating students and College alumni. Numerous ad hoc or scheduled departmental surveys also take place at the College, depending on need. IR has developed an "internal survey protocol" for tracking these surveys, disseminating results, encouraging dialogue between survey developers and offering guidance through all stages of internal survey implementation.
  • Research and Analysis - At the behest of College administrators, faculty and staff, as well as other institutional stakeholders, IR conducts research on contemporary issues related to higher education or to the mission and administration of the College. Such research may require the consultation of several sources: internal, departmental data; public data provided by other institutions; library materials, both print and electronic; and online databases produced by various organizations and governmental agencies.
