Using a Computer at Emmanuel

Emmanuel College provides public computer labs available to all students, but most students consider bringing their own computer to campus. The Information Technology Department does not provide hardware or software support for students' personal computers. This includes diagnosing and troubleshooting any issues with operating systems, viruses, or malfunctioning hardware.

We do provide limited support for the products listed below. We also ensure an active network drop in the student's room and that students understand how to configure their machines properly to connect to the Emmanuel network.

Buying a Computer: Where to Get Started

Many of you are considering purchasing a new computer for the upcoming school year. The large number of variables involved in such a purchase precludes us from making any broad recommendations. However, any member of the Information Technology staff would be happy to offer his or her advice on this subject. To get you started on the road to buying a new computer, here are a few web pages and phone numbers:

Supported Software

To ensure that your computer is compatible with our campus computing environment, below is a list of the most commonly-used and supported software products on campus. Students are free to use any software they choose, but technical assistance is available only for those products listed in each category. If you are planning to purchase a computer, any reputable computer retailer can assist you with the recommended hardware requirements to run these software packages. Also, some students may use specialized software and hardware as part of specific majors. Faculty within the department can advise you on the details.

*** Emmanuel College requires all computers connecting to the campus network to have active and up-to-date anti-virus software.

Anti-Virus Policy

Emmanuel College requires all computers which will be connecting to the campus network to have active and up-to-date antivirus software. If your machine is infected and the Helpdesk disables the network connection to your room, the network connection will not be re-enabled until an antivirus application is installed, updated, run and the Helpdesk verifies your machine is clean.

Disinfect and Protect

If you plan to bring your computer on campus, you are required to complete a series of steps before you may connect to the Emmanuel network. For more information or to begin the "disinfect and protect" process, visit www1.emmanuel.edu/helpdesk/soscd (link will open in new window).
