Leadership Development

L.E.A.D.E.R.S.

L.E.A.D.E.R.S. is a program developed by the Student Affairs staff to nourish and reward the life learning that takes place outside of the classroom. The goal of the program is to enrich your college experience and to equip you with the skills to succeed in your future work and, more importantly, your life.

The L.E.A.D.E.R.S. program focuses on seven specific areas of development:

  • Leadership - demonstrating responsibility and initiative, giving time and talent to generate activities and experiences that contribute to vibrant co-curricular life.
  • Ethics - development of ethical principles and values.
  • Activities - attending programs and/or participation in clubs, organizations and teams.
  • Dedication to Service - giving back to the community through volunteer work.
  • Evaluation - explanation of what you've learned in the program that is applicable to life after graduation.
  • Relationships - development of healthy, independent and interdependent self, commitment to personal wellness and global understanding.
  • Spirituality - examining, exploring and strengthening a relationship with God, finding meaning and a sense of direction, attaining inner peace.

The benefits of L.E.A.D.E.R.S. program are numerous. Participation in the program is measured in units, but the most important benefits of the program are not easily measured: maturity, confidence, leadership and inner strength. There are also tangible rewards to student development. When you complete the program, you receive an institutional letter of recommendation from Emmanuel College, and your achievements are included on your official college transcript.

To become a member of this program, you must make a commitment to participate in the seven key areas of student life and demonstrate breadth and depth of participation in activities outside the classroom.

The Leadership Institute

The Leadership Institute is designed to help students understand learning experiences in co-curricular life and their relationship to classroom work; to assist students in becoming effective leaders in organizations both at Emmanuel College and after graduation; and to encourage growth and development through active participation in discussion, exercises, and workshops. Campus personnel and experts from outside the college environment teach in the Institute's curriculum.

The Institute meets during the spring semester for eight weeks. Regular meetings insure that members are committed to the program and to their own personal development. The Institute begins with a mandatory one-day workshop to introduce students to conceptual precepts and to develop a contract for learning. Participants also participate in a community service project of their choosing and attend a diversity workshop to compliment their Institute sessions.
