Associate Professor of Management Management/Economics Department Chair

As a professor, I was challenged to develop a service-learning elective that would connect that which is so evident in the Emmanuel mission-serving and giving generously to others-with the quantitative and analytical skills that students need to learn to be successful in their field. In keeping with our mission, any course I created had to make a real difference for a local organization. It had to be hands on. It had to be something the students could be engaged with. And it had to go well beyond just classroom work.

The result was Management Research for Positive Change, and my students worked with neighboring Catholic school Mission Grammar to develop and administer a survey to parents. The resulting data will be used to help the school better serve its students and to improve recruitment efforts.

Through service-learning courses, local organizations gain access to support they otherwise would not have, and Emmanuel students receive high-level, hands-on experience to supplement their classroom work. It's a win-win experience for all.
