Professor Ahearn has contributed over 50 years of experience to both nursing practice and nursing education. Twenty-five of these years were spent conducting psychotherapy in a private setting as a certified clinical nurse specialist. In addition she cared for patients in a variety of settings in several states in both direct care and indirect care venues. Her teaching experiences were in both associate degree and baccalaureate degree nursing programs. She also acted in the role of a consultant to psychiatric nursing settings. She believes that the professional nurse represents knowledge, healing and caring to their patients. This constitutes the essence of nursing and has not changed over the years. Nursing practice is an opportunity to improve the quality of a person’s life during times of suffering, convalescence or at the end of life through compassion and the application of knowledge and high level skill sets. A career in nursing is a way to be true to the scholarly pursuit of the highest cognitive and affective aspirations. There is no higher calling than to comfort the sick, whether in body, mind or spirit which enhances the quality of life for everyone.
