As a native of central Illinois, I grew up far away from the hustle of the big city. While attending Saint Olaf College in Minnesota, I spent about five months in a study abroad program in Asia. Much of that time was spent in Chiang Mai, Thailand but I was lucky enough to see Japan, Hong Kong and China as well. For graduate school, I studied Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University in South Carolina. While there, I studied artificial intelligence and my master's project used neural networks to refine astronomical images. Since graduate school I have worked as a defense contractor just outside the Pentagon, taught high school mathematics, been a computer programmer, and loaded trucks for UPS. Every time I have gotten a job outside of academia, however, it draws me back in. Teaching is the best job there is because every semester is different and you always have a captive audience. Outside of school, my hobbies are reading, working on my 1971 VW Bus, and studying tae kwon do. For the academic year 2011 - 2012 I have added a one hour show on Emmanuel's radio station to my list of activities.
