Our society is increasingly technical; mathematical literacy is becoming more and more important for understanding issues facing society and for obtaining a share of the fruits of this society. A citizen must be able to understand quantitative information to be able to make informed decisions about political issues, to be able to make informed decisions as a consumer, and to qualify for a large proportion of the jobs at the professional level. All this says that understanding mathematics has become imperative for an educated person. My experience has taught me that all people are capable of becoming competent in mathematics at the level necessary for becoming an informed participant in society. My commitment to teaching stems from these convictions.

My graduate work was in partial differential equations. My current mathematical research interests are in combining differential equations and probability to look at questions in mathematical biology. Over the past years I have moved from being primarily interested in strictly theoretical mathematics to becoming increasingly interested in the application of mathematics to the problems of the real world.

In my spare time I enjoy mountain biking and am a member of the New England Mountain Bike Patrol.
