Jane Chaffin Kausel ’44 and Dr. Harvey Kausel

After graduating from Emmanuel in 1944, Jane Chaffin attended Yale University's graduate school of nursing where she met and later married the love of her life, Harvey Kausel. Jane and Harvey settled in Albany, New York, where he had a successful career as a thoracic surgeon and she became a pillar of the community. They were happily married for over 50 years until their deaths in 2002.

Always grateful for her Emmanuel education and the wonderful relationships she established with her classmates, Jane and Harvey chose to remember Emmanuel through a charitable bequest, the final distribution of which was awarded from their estates in 2005. According to their goddaughter, Jane Simon, "Jane and Harvey placed a high value on the importance of giving back, and on giving with no strings attached." The gift of Jane Chaffin Kausel and Dr. Harvey Kausel to Emmanuel is the largest charitable bequest in the College's history to date. Emmanuel College is deeply grateful to the Kausels for their forethought to provide for Emmanuel in their wills and their extraordinary generosity that will have a positive impact on the College for future generations.
