Emmanuel College Honors Program

Emmanuel College's Honors Program offers highly motivated students a comprehensive, four-year academic and co-curricular experience culminating in a senior capstone project.

By participating in the Honors Program, students not only fulfill general requirements in a challenging, discussion-based environment, but also examine the issues of the 21st century and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition from an interdisciplinary liberal arts and sciences perspective. The program combines course work with complementary opportunities highlighting Boston's outstanding music, lectures, arts, theater and museums, as well as chances to participate in faculty-directed research projects and service in the community.

The program begins with the Honors Colloquium, a one-semester forum for students to engage in an active and open dialogue with their peers and members of the College's faculty from across the disciplines. The advantages of this program include participation in small interactive class discussions with a cohort of like-minded students, the development of close working relationships with faculty members, and the enrichment of the academic experience through a focus on themes such as Leadership, Ethics and Social Justice, and Teamwork. Over the course of their studies, students participate in four interdisciplinary writing-intensive seminars—as well as a seminar on research and presentation—ultimately preparing them for the opportunity to achieve Distinction in the Field.

Emmanuel College Honors students engage in:

  • an Honors Colloquium
  • four interdisciplinary, writing-intensive seminars of small size (20 students maximum) that fulfill General Requirements
  • a service-learning component
  • an independent faculty-directed research project of the student's design and associated with Distinction in the Field
  • seminars in research and presentation skills
  • an Ethics Capstone Seminar in the senior year
  • a research presentation to the College community.

The College Honors Program has outlined four themes to address students' intellectual growth:

  • Foundations for Advanced Study
  • Ethics and Social Justice
  • Leadership and Team Work
  • Scholarship and Creativity
