Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Emmanuel College Academic Programs Site!
Emmanuel College is proud of our long tradition of providing students with an excellent liberal arts and sciences education. We believe, and the careers of our graduates demonstrate, that a strong liberal arts and sciences education provides students with the best preparation possible for both professional success and a meaningful life. At Emmanuel we all work with you to ensure that your education will be the foundation you need for the future you want.
At Emmanuel you will find that our focus is on you, the student. Our faculty are both teachers and scholars. Regardless of their field, they all share a deep interest in teaching and in helping students reach their goals. At Emmanuel, you are never anonymous. Faculty know their students' names, and are always willing to meet with students to provide academic help, advice, or just conversation. We are especially proud of our academic advising system. From your first days at Emmanuel, you will work with an academic advisor to build an academic plan that will take you where you want to go. Whether you arrive with a major in mind, or with no idea at all where your interests lie, your academic advisor will work with you to help you make the most of your education.
At Emmanuel, a liberal arts and sciences education has always been seen as practical education. This has never been more true than it will be in the twenty-first century.
A liberal arts and sciences education develops the ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively; the ability to analyze and evaluate information; an attitude of inquiry and openness; and an understanding of personal and social responsibility. These are the attributes that individuals need to succeed, and that a democratic society needs to prosper in this changing global society. In addition, our four-year career preparation program, which offers seminars and workshops that will help you identify your interests, develop a resume, and learn job-hunting and interviewing skills, will provide you with an opportunity to explore career possibilities. And, through our excellent internship program, you will have an opportunity to try out a position in a field of your choice, enhance your skills, establish professional contacts and build a resume while earning credits toward your degree.
At Emmanuel, we see your college education as an experience in which what you learn in the classroom, and what you learn outside the classroom: in campus activities, teams and organizations; in internships; through volunteer work; talking with faculty and advisors; are all working to help you identify your talents and interests, and to provide you with the skills and knowledge to be successful.
Nancy R. Northrup, Ph.D.
Dean of Arts and Sciences
