Steps to Take During Your Emmanuel Career


First Year

• Adjust to college learning to balance your new academic challenges and student activities with Boston city life. • Join EC3, Emmanuel's source for jobs and internships, to seek out part-time and off-campus jobs.
• Volunteer and get involved with service projects.
• Join student organizations, clubs, and sports teams that you're passionate about.
• Explore career opportunities by meeting with a career counselor.
• Speak with faculty and academic advising to research majors.
• Take a career assessment to identify your talents and potential major and career choices.
• Explore the 'What Can I Do With This Major?' section of our website.
• Visit the ICD Office to work with an advisor on transitioning your resume from high school to college.
• Attend career fairs and events.

Sophomore Year

• Join student organizations to explore your interests and to build leadership skills. Take on leadership roles.
• Learn about majors and careers and the academic department requirements.
• If you are unsure about the selection of a major, take a career inventory to identify your interests, values and skills.
• Participate in our Job Shadow Program.
• Refine your resume to showcase all transferable skills from your college involvement and leadership including clubs, sports, service, volunteer work, and jobs.
• Meet with a career counselor to develop a comprehensive approach to finding relevant work experience for the summer.
• Begin to clarify your career choice by scheduling and conducting informational interviews with alumni and professionals in the field.
• Attend information sessions on study abroad.
• Attend career fairs and events.

Junior Year

• Register for the required Pre-Internships and Career Planning course, INT 1001 before you participate in an internship. Best timing is the semester before you plan on interning.
• Learn appropriate attire for recruitment events. Purchase a suit that fits well along with shoes.
• Conduct informational interviews to investigate what is involved in certain careers of interest.
• Keep your resume updated and add pertinent documentation to your portfolio for certain career fields.
• Learn how internships work at Emmanuel, and what your major requires of you.
• Study Abroad!
• Participate in our Job Shadow Program.
• Assist a faculty member in their research and add it to your resume.
• Get serious about work experience. Make it meaningful and related.
• Conduct a mini-internship to gain experience and to get a taste of a career field.
• If graduate study is in your plans, discuss with faculty, ARC and career advisors about graduate school preparation and application processes. Begin to research specific programs.
• Attend workshops on applying to graduate school.
• Fine-tune your interview skills by mock interviewing with one of our advisors.

Senior Year

• Start the application to graduate/professional school in the fall.
• Direct any special senior research and writing projects to your career field of interest.
• Identify professional references and individuals who will write letters of recommendation.
• Complete your academic internship requirements and begin networking for post graduation plans.
• Generate a personal networking list to guide your search.
• Attend career events and job fairs to learn about opportunities.
• Identify full-time job opportunities to pursue.
• Tailor your resume and cover letters for individual positions and schools.
• Schedule a mock-interview with the ICD staff to build confidence.
• Buy 'Thank You' cards to have on hand to send to employers and references.
• Update your LinkedIn profile and join groups such as ICD and Emmanuel Alumni to network.
• Keep your faculty and career advisors informed of your progress and success.
