About Internships

Logistics of an Internship

Each academic department has the flexibility to customize its internship program to meet the department's goals and the student's needs.

Internships normally run for one semester; 12 to 14 weeks duration. There are some majors which require a two semester internship. In a part-time internship, a student is expected to work a 15-20 hour week. This can be accomplished in anywhere from a two to a five day work week depending on the nature of the duties and the organization. All sick and absent time should be made up in order to complete the total time required by their faculty sponsor.

Most students are able to take internships for either elective or major course credit. In fact, many of the academic majors at Emmanuel require an internship prior to graduation.

All internships must be approved by the faculty sponsor prior to the start of work. This may require a letter briefly stating a job description, duties, and hours from the site supervisor. The faculty sponsor will be in touch with the site supervisor during the semester to discuss the student's progress. One or more site visits by the sponsor will also occur.

If a student is doing an internship on a full-time basis, the specific logistics need to be coordinated with the faculty sponsor. However, in most cases, a 30-40 hour week is expected with a major project completed as part of the learning experience.
