Emmanuel Hosts Boston Public Schools Special Olympics
February 10, 2010
Local middle school and high school students took part in the 2010 Boston Public Schools Special Olympics held in Emmanuel's Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium on February 9th.
Women's Basketball Head Coach Andy Yosinoff helped coordinate the event, which included students from seven different Boston public schools: Dorchester High School, East Boston High School, Boston English High School, Charlestown High School, Brighton High School, Gavin Middle School (South Boston) and Umana Middle School (East Boston). Funded by Special Olympics Massachusetts, the event brought about 120 students and 30 teachers to campus to participate in a floor hockey tournament followed by lunch in the College's dining hall.
Mark Spolidoro, an adapted physical education teacher with Boston Public Schools and the coordinator for Special Olympics Massachusetts/Unified Sports, was excited by the expansion of this year's program, with so many different schools participating in the day's events. This was the program's 12th year coordinating Special Olympic Games.
"The day was hugely successful. It was a great opportunity for the kids to get out and get some physical activity and see some old friends. Playing at a great facility such as Emmanuel College really makes the day that much more meaningful and special for the kids," said Spolidoro. "Of course without the support of Special Olympics Massachusetts none of this would be possible. It's a great collaboration between Special Olympics, Emmanuel College and Boston Public Schools."
