Laws Named Women's Lacrosse Coach

November 10, 2009

Emmanuel College is pleased to announce the hiring of Amanda Laws as women's varsity lacrosse coach. Laws will be the head coach for the new Emmanuel program as it begins its inaugural season of varsity competition in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) during the 2010-2011 season. Laws will also coach the team at the club level during the 2009-2010 season, as it prepares for varsity play next year.

"Amanda Laws is an outstanding addition to the Emmanuel Athletic Department," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Pam Roecker. "She is a proven winner, with a great deal of experience to offer our women's lacrosse players. Amanda's passion for the sport and commitment to academics made her the perfect choice to lead our program."

Coach Laws brings with her coaching experiences at several different levels. She spent two seasons as a Division I assistant coach at the University of New Hampshire. While there, she helped the Wildcats to two American East Tournament appearances. Laws also coached lacrosse at the club and high school levels. She was the head coach of the Nor'easter Lacrosse Club from 2005-2007 and the head coach of the Medford High School girl's lacrosse team in 2004. While at Medford, Laws led the Mustangs to a program record for wins in a season and to the program's first-ever state tournament appearance.

When asked about the challenge of establishing a new program, Laws replied, "It is an honor to be selected as the coach of the Emmanuel women's lacrosse program. It is an incredible opportunity to lead the lacrosse program into its first spring at Emmanuel. I look forward to starting a winning tradition and know that the incredible academic programs, facilities, supportive staff and enthusiastic students will help pave the way."

As a player, Laws was a standout goalie at Yale University, earning All-Ivy League honors in 2003. Laws' team was ranked 8th nationally and won an Ivy League Championship in 2003. She also led the program to the quarterfinals of the national tournament during the same year.

The addition of women's lacrosse to the Saints' roster brings the total number of varsity sports sponsored at Emmanuel to 16. The Emmanuel lacrosse team will both practice and play games on the newly renovated turf at Roberto Clemente Field.
