Benenson's Research Receives International Recognition

Joyce Benenson, Associate Professor of Psychology

February 24, 2009

Research conducted by Associate Professor of Psychology Joyce Benenson, along with recent Emmanuel graduates Caitlin Fitzgerald '08, Diana Geoffroy '08 and Julianne Fleming '08, has recently garnered global interest. The study examined males' and females' levels of tolerance towards same-sex peers. The findings, as reported in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, reveal that males are more tolerant than females of unrelated same-sex individuals.

Headlined in the UK's The Sun, the study has since been recognized by Marie Claire,The Telegraph (British newspaper), The Iran Daily,The Leader-Post of Canada and Science Magazine, a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. According to the group's research, "females may simply weigh negative information more heavily than males do, because negative information disrupts the establishment of intimacy, which serves a more important function in same-sex relationships for females than for males."
