Emmanuel to Officially Open Academic Year with Mass of the Holy Spirit and Academic Convocation

September 04, 2012
Emmanuel will kick off the 2012-2013 academic year with the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit and Academic Convocation on Monday, September 10th and Tuesday, September 11th, respectively. All members of the College community are invited to attend.
The Mass of the Holy Spirit, a longstanding tradition among Catholic colleges and universities that dates back to 16th-century Europe, serves as a means of invoking the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom throughout the academic year and allows the College community to come together and celebrate Emmanuel's mission and Catholic identity.
College Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry Reverend John P. Spencer, SJ will preside over the Mass, which will be celebrated in the Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium Monday, September 11th, at 4:30 p.m. Beginning at 3:45 p.m., faculty will assemble in the Fenway Room; the senior class will assemble on the 2nd floor of the Jean Yawkey Center; student groups will assemble on the quad and are encouraged to wear their respective group shirt or polo.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dr. Sheri Fink will provide the keynote address at this year's Academic Convocation. Dr. Fink will discuss ethics in times of emergency and the moral issues raised by her story "The Deadly Choices at Memorial," for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting in 2010. The article, published by The New York Times Magazine in August 2009, and Dave Eggers's Zeitoun served as the College's summer reading selections for incoming first-year students. Emmanuel's Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Joyce De Leo will introduce Dr. Fink.
Academic Convocation will be held Tuesday, September 11th, at 12:15 p.m. in the Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium.
