Student’s Illustrations Featured in Fr. Leclerc’s Recent Book

Thirteen illustrations by Emmanuel senior Spencer Linick '08 appear in the recently published book, Introduction to Prophets: Their Stories, Sayings and Scrolls, written by Associate Professor of Religious Studies Fr. Thomas Leclerc, M.S.
The collaboration began last year, after Fr. Leclerc discovered Linick sketching during one of his "Introduction to the Hebrew Bible" classes. Rather than reprimand him for his inattentiveness, Fr. Leclerc instead decided to take advantage of a unique opportunity to highlight a student's work.
"I just saw talent there and asked him if he had any interest in a project like this," said Fr. Leclerc.
Published in December by Paulist Press, the book represents the first student collaboration for Fr. Leclerc, who uses the text in his "Prophets: Power, Politics and Principles" class. Due to the high price of including copyrighted photographs, Linick's illustrations - all of which were drawings of artifacts taken from photos - proved to be a creative solution to cutting costs.
"It was a way of keeping the book at an affordable price for students, as well as providing a student with an extraordinary opportunity to have his work published," said Fr. Leclerc. "And to be able to provide an opportunity like this is a teacher's dream."
