Emmanuel College invites recommendations and applications for the position of Dean of Arts and Sciences in a vibrant academic community that has experienced explosive growth over the past six years. Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean provides leadership and budgetary oversight for 16 departments and four interdisciplinary programs, oversees all faculty evaluation and personnel actions and is responsible for hiring and development of faculty, scheduling of classes, working collaboratively with the faculty to develop the curriculum and implement new programs. In addition, the Dean oversees the Assistant Dean for First Year Programs, the operations of the Honors Program, the Study Abroad Office, the Careers and Internship Office, the award-winning Academic Advising Office and staff, and the Academic Resource Center.
The candidate will hold an earned doctorate with qualifications that merit appointment as a tenured professor in an academic department of the College. The candidate will also have held the position of department chair or above and have a record of developing academic programs, recruiting and cultivating a diverse faculty, promoting a multicultural learning environment and fostering scholarly activities. The ideal candidate will have a collaborative disposition, be an accomplished scholar and teacher, possess the ability to think strategically and globally and have an appreciation for the liberal arts and the Catholic intellectual tradition.
Emmanuel College, founded in 1919 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, is a co-educational, residential, Catholic liberal arts and sciences college located in the heart of Boston's educational, scientific, cultural, and medical communities. Since becoming a fully co-educational institution in 2001, the College has become one of the fastest growing in the region. Applications have increased 5-fold and the endowment has grown to $85 million. Today, enrollment tops 2,300 students, including 1,700 at the undergraduate level, and includes representation from 32 states and 23 countries. In 2004, Merck Pharmaceutical Company opened its impressive Research Center on the Emmanuel campus, beginning a partnership with the College that has created various opportunities for collaboration including faculty and student research, internships, and seminars.
